ACA Summer Course

We are now accepting applications for the 2022 ACA Summer Course in Chemical Crystallography. Applications for the course are available here.

Pending no unforeseen circumstances, the course will be an in-person event and will be held at Purdue University from June 12th through June 19th. We expect that all participants will need to provide proof of vaccination and attendees will have to agree to adhere to Purdue’s COVID-19 rules and protocols (details will be posted as we are moving closer to the Course dates).

We regret that we have to announce that this year’s ACA Summer Course will be canceled due to the continuing global pandemic.

Recent estimates indicate that vaccinations for the general public in the US will not begin until late Spring or early Summer. Full vaccination of a majority of the adult population will be taking even longer. This makes it unlikely that an in-person event, especially with many hands-on activities and personal interactions such as the ACA Summer Course is known for, will be possible this year. Considering the time that is required to plan an event such as the ACA Summer Course we regret that we have to cancel this year’s Course.

We know that many of you looked very much forward to the Course, and we understand your disappointment. We, the organizers of the Course and the teaching faculty, feel the same. Most of us have been very strongly committed to the course for years or even decades, and the Course is one of the highlights of the year for all of us. If your schedule allows, and if crystallography remains an important part of your future plans, we would love to see you at the 2022 Course instead. Registration will tentatively open on January 1^st, 2022.

It is still unclear at this time if we can offer the ACA Summer Course in 2021. Due to the uncertainty of the current, global pandemic we can at this point not predict if conditions will allow us to host an in-person event this Summer. Given the slow pace of vaccination and the general vaccine shortage it is at this time more likely that we cannot offer the Course this year.

If the situation does substantially improve and the ACA Summer Course can be held this year, then it will be in July and it will be held at Purdue University. Given the uncertainty we do not yet accept any applications for the course. We will be revisiting the situation later this Winter and will post another update in late February, when we will announce if we will continue to consider holding the Course. The earliest we might accept applications, if at all, would be in early March.

Dear Participants of the 2020 ACA Summer Course

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that we will have to cancel this year’s ACA Summer Course in Chemical Crystallography. The planned dates for the Course, May 31^st to June 7^th, are drawing closer and closer, and we have been informed by the University that all events with outside participation or with more than 50 participants are cancelled until including May 31^st. As this is the first day of our event, the ACA Summer Course falls under that order and has been canceled.

We had been considering pushing back the starting date or postponing the Course. The latest the Course could have been held this Summer would have been late July to early August. However, there is no short or medium-term solution for the COVID-19 crisis in sight. While stay at home orders might be gradually lifted coming July or August, social distancing will likely to stay in place for the foreseeable future (i.e. until a vaccine or treatment has been developed). With this in mind we decided against trying to move the dates for the 2020 Course. We will instead meet again for the next regular scheduled Course in the Summer of 2021.

The continued spread of the novel coronavirus is increasingly affecting public life in the US, and around the world. Travel restrictions are increasingly put in place, both by universities and employers as well as increasingly by local, State and the Federal Government. While conferences larger than 50 participants are currently not canceled at Purdue University beyond the end of March, it is becoming more and more likely that we cannot host the ACA Summer Course at the planned dates, May 31^st to June 7^th.

Given the situation, we are considering options, such as postponing the 2020 ACA Summer Course. This may be an option if by later this Summer the spread of the coronavirus in the US has left the acceleration phase in which it is now. If significant spread does continue during the Summer months, we might have to cancel the 2020 Course entirely.

At this time, we are not yet cancelling the Course, but we are delaying acceptance of registration payments, opening of the booking page for housing, and payments of student travel grants. Depending on developments, we will be waiting to make final decisions for several more weeks. The latest date a decision will be made will be the end of April. If by that time it is questionable if the Summer Course can be conducted in a safe and secure way, it will be rescheduled or cancelled and we will inform all accepted participants.

Please let us know if your institution or employer is imposing travel restrictions that will extend to the scheduled course time. Please also let us know if you have any preferred dates for a rescheduled course later this Summer before the beginning of the Fall semester at Purdue (Aug. 24^th).

Due to overwhelming demand, we have reached capacity for the 2020 ACA Summer Course and are no longer accepting applications. Please check back here in January of 2021 for applications for the 2021 course.

Due to overwhelming demand, we have reached the limit of applicants we will be able to accommodate at the Course this year. The applications portal will remain open for an additional short period of time. Acceptance of applications received after Feb 1st will however be conditional on available space.
